Senior party is 
a spooky smash

PLAINVILLE — It was a graveyard smash at Day-Break of Farmington’s 2014 Halloween Boo Bash.

The facility at 290 Farmington Ave. was adorned with grinning jack-o’-lanterns and spiders crawling on cobwebs. Seniors donned in their spooky getups and danced to frightening favorites of the Halloween season. The Ghostbusters theme song and “This is Halloween” from Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” blared on speakers as pirates, witches and skeletons joined in a parade.

Adult Day Services: A Model of Person- and Family-Centered Care

A recent study found that more than a quarter million participants attend an estimated 4,800 community-based adult day service (ADS) centers in the U.S. Although most participants are older people, more than one-third of ADS participants are younger than 65. Nearly one in three ADS participants has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Ninety-one-year-old Farmington resident Luis Rodriguez, remembers, as an 18 year-old he enlisted in the army in Puerto Rico and found himself in a segregated unit. He fought valiantly and is proud of his role in protecting this country’s freedom but he says, “There was always a sadness in my heart” regarding the treatment of the 65th regiment known as the “Borinqueneers.”

PLAINVILLE — Day-Break offers activities, medical care and social opportunities for local seniors.The medical model adult day-care facility at 290 Farmington Ave. is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday year-round except on Christmas.
